Everyday our society has been expanding and changing the way we live. Dramatic population growth has certainly created a major problem to our society. Urban spaces are increasingly over populated. Affordable housing and green open spaces have been dramatic decrease. Architecture should not just simply about consume spaces, but also improve as well. According to a United Nation survey in 2005, there are around 100 million of homeless in the world (a conservative estimate).
Homelessness is the condition and social category of people without a regular house or dwelling because they cannot afford, or are otherwise unable to maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
Homeless people are everywhere, in China, India and even developed countries such as USA and UK. As the numbers of homeless people grow, many places where once allowed loiter like parks, libraries, churches; closed their doors when services were not being held, , shopping mall atrium; hired private security guards and even toilets have became stricter areas. This has created a lot of social tension. As a result, many of the homeless population are spread out to parks, under bridges, and undergrounds. They slowly became socially invisible.
In an attempt to respond to the situation, the goal is to develop an expandable architecture shelter that would encourage homeless to congregate together to create their own community. By doing so, this promote them to interact with one another and help each other out. So that the expandable shelter will ease the social tension and hopefully one day they will have the courage to head back to the society.

Expandable shelter that is capable of changing its forms according to its use at any particular moment. This will provide the flexibility for the homeless to dwell anywhere at anytime. Through the design of a transitory event building investigates of performative geometry and experience of space.
Utilize Grasshopper, parametric design tool, and digital fabrication as a technique for creating expandable surfaces. The parameters will be based on the event, user and location from macro to micro scale. These parameters will be explored and future developed to create new geometric shape and methodologies; the ergonomics of the human body, the lighting condition, the noise condition, pedestrian flow and the materiality.
Other ways of creating expandable structures and surfaces will be look into such as: folding, framework with hinge system, air pressure system, modules system, zip.

The exploration of expandable surfaces and social issues of homeless will be experimented on the design of an expandable homeless shelter. Modular expandable shelters will be attached to the nearby homeless charity centre in Nottingham for resting at night. During the day, the shelter will function as an extension of the charity centre to provide a comfort, secure, hygienic, warmth, supportive and helpful environment for the homeless. This transitory event will be the key to create a sense of community within the homeless group.
